Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists mostly of photocopies of the records of the Richmond Woman's Club. The organization ran a small library for Richmond for many years and the collection includes copies of their accession records as well as minutes, scrapbooks and yearbooks all of which document to membership and activities of the group.

In addition to the library, the Club has supported scholarship programs, provided toys to children at Christmas, encouraged and supported community gardening and beautification, fed school children, sponsored art contests for children, and organized fashion shows to support local clothing stores to name just a few.

Due to two separate fires in the Richmond Woman's Club building these copies are all that remains of the records of this long standing organization.

Biographical Note

The Richmond Woman's Club was chartered in 1904 by charter president, Mrs. Frank Jennings. It was federated as a chapter of the Kentucky Federation of Woman's Clubs in 1905. Their activities were interrupted by World War I, but it was reorganized in 1923 and existed continuously until 2013 when it disbanded due to low membership.

The programs of the Woman's Club had a positive impact on the Richmond community, but of particular note was the library which provided the town's main access to a library before the Madison County Public Library was established in the 1990s.
