Folder 1: University of Kentucky- Graduate and Doctorate Programs, 1938-1942

Contains correspondence regarding Aughtum Howard's graduate and doctorate programs at the University of Kentucky. Includes letters detailing an oral examination to complete the graduate program, graduate school graduation , work as a graduate assistant, Ph.D. credits, a Ph.D. special committee, initiation into Sigma Xi, membership in the American Mathematical Society, a fellowship scholarship,  an oral exam to complete the Ph.D. program, and doctorate graduation.

Folder 2: Speeches, 1940-1958

Contains speeches writeen by Aughtum Howard. Includes  speeches given to the University of Kentucky Math club,  chapel talks given at Kentucky Wesleyan, a speech given on exracurricular activities,a speech given to the Business and Professional Women's Club, a commencement speech given at North Marshall Country High School, a speech tot he Faculty Club at Kentucky Wesleyan, a speech given at the Disciple Student Fellowship's sacrificial banquet, a speech given to the Physics Club at Eastern, a speech given at a faculty meeting at Eastern, and a speech given to the Kentucky section of the Mathematical Association of America about the 1961 Curriculum Study in Mathematics.

Folder 3: War Ration Books and Cards- WWII, 1942-1944

Contains War Ration Books three and four from 1943 for Noel Howard, Aughtum Howard, and Robert Howard. Also contains mileage ration cards and registration certificates, and notice of classification cards for Noel Howard.

Folder 4: Miscellaneous Kentucky Wesleyan Correspondence, 1942-1958

Contains letters addressed to and sent by Aughtum Howard covering topics including math courses, meetings, requests for social security numbers, a visit with Jesse Stuart, Greek initiation activities, thesis results, math department student assistants, the Third District Education Association, studies, the Library Committee, and the racial policies of Kentucky Wesleyan.

Folder 5: Red Cross College Chapter- Kentucky Wesleyan, 1944-1945

Contains information regarding the establishment of an American Red Cross chapter at Kentucky Welsleyan. Includes the authority to organize the chapter, officer elections, and the American Red Cross college unit policies.

Folder 6: Programs and Convention Notebook, 1946-1961

Contains programs from the 1946 Annual Guest Night of the Poet's Club, the 1947 Annual Guest Night of the Poet's Club, and the Kentucky Education Association Twenty-Seventh Annual School Executives Luncheon. Also contains a convention notebook from the Christian Board of Publication.

Folder 7: Kentucky Wesleyan Faculty Reports, 1948-1957

Contains lists of roles of various Kentucky Wesleyan faculty members, including organization of faculty for home games, faculty advisors, faculty committees, college committees, and the faculty club program.

Folder 8: Student Government- Kentucky Wesleyan, 1951

Contains a report on student government and student leadership at Kentucky Wesleyan written by Dr. Aughtum Howard while she was chairman of the extra-curricular committee.

Folder 9: Mathematical Association of America- Kentucky Wesleyan, 1951-1957

Contains papers regarding the Kentucky section of the Mathematical Association of America. Papers include letters from the secretary-treasurer of the organization, letters regarding Traveling Speaker Dr. Walter Moore, letters regarding math lectures, meeting announcements for the Kentucky section, and letters inquiring about the MAA's committees.

Folder 10: Kentucky Wesleyan Annual Reports, 1951-1958

Contains annual reports to the Kentucky Wesleyan College president regarding which courses were taught, the credit hours of each course, the number of students in each course, the number of absences in each course, and the number of students who earned each letter grade.

Folder 11: Poetry, 1952-1953

Contains the May-June 1952 issue of the Christian Education Magazine with Dr. Aughtum Howard's poem, "I Am A Teacher" featured, as well as correspondence regarding the feature. Also includes other poems written by Dr. Howard, including "When Comes the Spring," "Stones and Sand," "Worry," "We Lift Our Hands," and "My Garden."

Folder 12: Kentucky Association of Church-Related Colleges- Meeting Minutes and Correspondence, 1952-1954

Contains papers regarding the Kentucky Association of Church-Related Colleges. Includes letters regarding Dr. Howard's stay at Centre College for the association's meeting, a letter about the association's nominating committee, a mailing list for members of the group, meeting minutes, and letters regarding new positions after elections took place.

Folder 13: Kentucky Association of Colleges, Secondary, and Elementary Schools, 1952-1955

Contains papers regarding the Kentucky Association of Colleges, Secondary, and Elementary Schools. Includes a letters regarding the Commission of Colleges and Universities, lists of members and committees, newsletters, research reports, conference pamphlets, letters regarding meeting speakers, meeting schedules, the constitution of the association, and a bulletin of the Bureau of School Service.

Folder 14: Mathematical Association of America- Kentucky Section Traveling Speaker, 1945-1955

Contains correspondence about Dr. Aughtum Howard's time as Traveling Speaker for the Kentucky section of the Mathematical Association of America. Includes letters regarding the procedure for securing Dr. Howard as a guest lecturer, and requests from various Kentucky colleges for visits.

Folder 15: Kentucky Section of Mathematical Association of America- Correspondence with Dr. J.C. Eaves (UofK), 1955-1958

Contains letters between Dr. Aughtum Howard and Dr. J.C. Eaves from the University of Kentucky. Contents of the letters include a request for graduate students, request for guest speaking from Dr. J.C. Eaves as the Traveling Speaker of the Kentucky section of the Mathematical Association of America, proposed dates for Dr. J.C. Eaves' visit to Kentucky Wesleyan College, and a request for Dr. Aughtum Howard to be a guest speaker at the National Science Foundation program.

Folder 16: Engineering Program- Kentucky Wesleyan, 1957-1958

Contains notes and letters regarding the establishment of 3-2 Engineering Program at Kentucky Wesleyan.

Folder 17: Move from Kentucky Wesleyan to Eastern, 1958

Contains letters regarding an open teaching position in the mathematics department at Eastern from Dr. Smith Park, head of the mathematics department at Eastern, and letters following arranging a meeting time, Dr. Aughtum Howard's acceptance of the job, Dr. Aughtum Howard's resignation letter to Kentucky Wesleyan, letters following her resignation from Kentucky Wesleyan president, Oscar Lever, and a letter from Bill Owsley from Morehead State College asking if Dr. Howard would be open to working there instead.

Folder 18: Speeches/Papers, 1954-1976

Contains speeches and papers written by Dr. Aughtum Howard. Includes a speech titled "We Count," a speech titled, "The New Mathematics, a speech given on Smith and Nancy Park on the occasion of their retirement from Eastern Kentucky University, a paper written about improving instruction, a speech prepared for a meeting of the Richmond Women's Club titled "The Bicentennial Christmas," a speech titled "Pints and Pounds," a paper written to solve a mathematical expansion problem, and a paper about advising mathematics majors.

Folder 19: Contributions to American Mathematical Monthly, 1959-1970

Contains solutions submitted by Dr. Aughtum Howard for problems proposed in American Mathematical Monthly and cards thanking her for her participation. Also contains correspondence regarding problems Dr. Howard submitted to American Mathematical Monthly, solutions to the problems, and whether or not the problems would be published.

Folder 20: Teacher Preparation Courses and Graduates, 1960-1961

Contains a note about an Introduction to Education course and a chart detailing the graduates in teacher preparation at various Kentucky colleges.

Folder 21: Mathematical Association of America- Binomial Expansion Paper, 1960-1966

Contains correspondence regarding a paper submitted for publishing in the Classroom Notes section of the American Mathematical Monthly, comments on the paper, revising of the paper, and the publishing of the paper many years later.

Folder 22: Mathematical Association of America- Eastern, 1960-1972

Contains papers related to the Mathematical Association of America. Contents include letters about electing a governor for the Kentucky section, letters announcing meetings of the Kentucky section and national organization, programs for meetings of the Kentucky section and national organization, letters regarding representatives for the organization from all universities and colleges, letters regarding officer elections, meeting minutes, a questionnaire for members of the organization, and bylaws of the Kentucky section. Also contains scores and summaries from Mathematics Association of America high school contests.

Folder 1: Journals, 1961

Contains two journals kept by Dr. Aughtum Howard. Pages contain handwritten and typed accounts of visiting different schools for the Curriculum Study Committee. Accounts focus on what curriculum is taught and observations about the schools.

Folder 2: Miscellaneous Eastern Correspondence, 1961-1970

Contains letters addressed to and sent by Dr. Aughtum Howard covering topic including an invitation to speak at the Women's Club, Founders Day awards, the Summer Institute of Mathematics, textbook errors, a speech by Dean Barr, teacher certification in the state of Kentucky, elementary school instruction improvement, and an article in The American Scientist.

Folder 3: Instruction Improvement, 1962-1963

Contains correspondence regarding a meeting of the Central Kentucky ASCD District on curriculum improvement and Dr. Aughtum Howard's attendance as a resource person. Also contains invitations to the ASCD meeting, a program for the meeting, and suggestions for group discussions on curriculum improvement. Also contains correspondence regarding Dr. Howard speaking at a Teachers' Conference in Letcher County, a program and group schedule for the Teachers' Conference focusing on the improvement of instruction, and two reports on improving oral and written communication.

Folder 4: AAUP- Committee on Faculty Participation in Administration, 1962-1964

Contains a statement of principles approved by the council of the AAUP regarding university faculty, a report of the committee on faculty participation in college and university government, a paper written by T.L. Arterberry on faculty participation in college administration, a speech given by Dr. Aughtum Howard on faculty in administration at Alice Lloyd Junior College, a and a speech given by Dr. Howard to students of Alice Lloyd College.

Folder 5: National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 1962-1972

Contains a letter to Eastern president, Dr. Robert R. Matin, requesting permission to attend a session of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, a letter to the council regarding a change in a journal, and a letter from the membership supervisor of the organization acknowledging Dr. Aughtum Howard's Life Membership payment to the council.

Folder 6: Governor's Conference on Higher Education, 1963

Contains newspaper clippings focusing on the Governor's Conference on Higher Education, correspondence regarding registration for the conference, a program from the conference, a copy of "Within Our Reach: Highlights from the Report of the Commission on Goals for Higher Education in the South," and a booklet of proceedings from the Governor's Conference on Higher Education, and a copy of "A Foundation Program for Public Higher Education in Kentucky."

Folder 7: Operation Eastern Kentucky, 1963

Contains announcements and letters regarding flooding in Eastern Kentucky and relief efforts through donations to Operation Eastern Kentucky.

Folder 8: EKU Student Class Papers- Freshmen, 1963-1964

Contains correspondence regarding Dr. Aughtum Howard's role as co-sponsor of EKU's freshaman class, handwritten notes relating to the freshmen class, a seating arrangment for freshmen orientation, a speech given to the freshman class by Dr. Howard, newspaper clipping relating the the freshmen class and freshmen class officers, lists of freshmen class officers and council members, announcements for a Mardi Gras dance, a list of Mardi Gras queen nominations, papers regarding Sunday afternoon coffee hours hosted by freshmen to meet faculty, a newspaper clipping about freshman-faculty coffee hours, the constitution of the freshman class, and a list of activities carried out by the freshmen class in the 1963-1964 school year.

Folder 9: Library Self-Study Committee, 1963-1965

Contains a list of committees for self-study for the Southern Association, faculty bulletins, correspondence regarding the libray self-study committee, steering committee meeting minutes and memos, correspondence regarding an otuline of the approach taken by the library self-study committee, surveys gathered for the study, reports on findings of the library self-study committee, evaluations of library holdings, and reports on individual sections of the library.

Folder 10: EKU Student Class Papers- Sophomores, 1964-1965

Contains flyers andpapers with information regarding sophomore class officer candidates, handwritten meeting minutes for sophomore class meetings, lists of endorsements for sophomore class officer positions, the constitution of the sophomore class, and a list of activities carried out by the sophomore class in the 1964-1965 school year. Also contains correspondence regarding class officer pictures, homecoming floats, a sophomore class social committee, and a student cheering section at basketball games.

Folder 11: Kentucky Colonel, 1965

Contains correspondence regarding Dr. Aughtum Howard's rank in The Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels, the correct spelling of Dr. Howard's name, and further information on being a Kentucky Colonel.

Folder 12: EKU Student Class Papers- Juniors, 1965-1966

Contains corresponence regarding junior class officers, correspondence and informational memos on a junior class activity weekend, activity weekend schedules, flyers for activity weekend events, rules for activity weekend, an official score sheet for activity weekend, invoices for supplies, and handwritten meeting minutes and attendance of the junior class.

Folder 13: Miscellaneous Student Class Papers, 1966-1967

Contains a student activity account signature card, a hanbook for treasurers of student organizations, a letter to the editor of the Eastern Progress, and a copy of the Eastern Commentator.

Folder 14: EKU Student Papers- Seniors, 1966-1968

Contains a list of elected officers of the senior class, correspondence regarding a bill remaining from the junior class, correspondence regarding class rings, a request for two members of the senior class to serve on the social committee, meeting announcements, a Student Organizations Newsletter, correspondence and flyers regarding a senipr class gift, the senior class constitution, meeting minutes for senior class meetings, and a list of activities put on by the senior class in the 1966-1967 school year.

Contains a booklet of information about Sigma Xi, a program for the installation of Sigma Xi at Eastern Kentucky University, lists of members in the EKU Sigma Xi club, letters regarding the installation of the club, letters announcing meeting dates, meeting minutes for club meetings and executive committee meetings, club bylaws, meeting reminders, proposed bylaw amandments,a program for the forty-ninth annual Sigma Xi banquet at University of Kentucky, types of membership in Sigma Xi, letters relating to the National Convention of the Society of Sigma Xi, requests for travel to the national convention, a report on the national convention, a program for club events at EKU from 1970-1971, a pamphlet for the annual EKU Sigma Xi banquet in 1971, and an envelope of items related to Dr. Aughtum Howard's trip to the national convention in Palm Springs.

Folder 2: Mathematical Monthly- Polygonomials Manuscript, 1968

Contains a manuscript sent to Mathematical Monthly that was refused because it contained no new formula and correspondence regarding the manuscript's submission.

Folder 3: American Association of University Professors- Speech to Kentucky Wesleyan Chapter, 1968-1969

Contains correspondence with Professor Joe Britton from Kentucky Wesleyan University regarding giving a speech to the Kentucky Wesleyan chapter of the American Association of University Porfessors. Also includes the paper presented on by Dr. Aughtum Howard, which covers the work she did with the Eastern chapter of thr American Association of University Professors.

Folder 4: Baggett Memorial- Kentucky Wesleyan, 1974-1975

Contains an invitation to the dedication of the chapel organ at Kentucky Wesleyan,a program for the dedication, a thank you note from Margaret Britton for donating to the Baggett Memorial Organfund , and correspondence regarding donations to the fund, attendence at the dedication, and Dr. Howard's visit to the college for the dedication.

Folder 5: Curriculum and Instruction Information, 1958-1961

Contains information on curriculum and instruction in a booklet titled "Offerings and Enrollments in Science and Mathematics in Kentucky High Schools" from the Kentucky Department of Education, a booklet titled "Principles and Procedures of Curriculum Development" from the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and a booklet titled "Our Schools at the Crossroads" from the League of Women Voters of Paducah and McCracken County.

Folder 6: Curriculum Study Committee- School Lists and Suggested Rankings, 1959-1961

Contains lists of schools visited by the Curriculum Study Committee and recommended rankings for high schools.

Folder 7: Curriculum Study Committee Meetings, 1960-1961

Contains meeting minutes and notes from meetings of the Curriculum Study Committee.

Folder 8: Curriculum Study Committee Correspondence, 1960-1964

Contains correspondence regarding the establishment of the Curriculum Study Committee, the nomination of Dr. Aughtum Howard to the committee, meetings of the committee, requests for information regarding curriculum study, opinions on the curriculum study committee, living arrangements for committee travel, visits to schools, committee reports, radio and television recordings relating to the commitee reports, and reporting the findings at the Kentucky section of the Mathematical Association America.

Contains a schedule of visits to different schools for the Curriculum Study Committee. Includes details such as dates of visits, committee attendees, and lodging arrangements.

Folder 10: Curriculum Study Committee- Student Questionnaire, 1961

Contains questionnaire responses from high school students. Questions asked about subjects they had taken and what their grades were in the classes, what sucject they liked the most, and what subject they liked the least.

Contains correspondence regarding the Curriculum Study Committee's report on the Kentucky Department of Education as well as a draft of the report itself.

Contains an outline of general areas that should be included in curriculum study reports, as well as committee repots in the following areas: English and Language Arts, Social Studies, the Curriculum Study Committee, Mathematics, and Speech.
