Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection includes a lot of candid pictures and portraits of African American community members, showcasing everyday life. There are newspaper clippings that include death and birth notices, community news, and ads for the funeral home. Father’s Day, anniversary, and thank cards. Letters thanking him for his services, and letters congratulating him on awards and recognitions. Most of the items are undated.

Collection Historical Note

Squire Collins (09/02/1894 - 10/02/1983) was a Madison County, Kentucky funeral home director. He owned Collins Mortuary. He was a celebrated pillar of the community and was recognized for 50 years of service. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and served as coroner. He also participated in several conventions for African American Morticians and Funeral Directors for Kentucky and Tennessee. He was drafted for World War 1 and 2. Was married to Albirda Collins. They had two daughters, Cecilia and Blanche.
