Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection documents the activities of the Eastern Kentucky University Student Association from the years of 1964-1975. This includes correspondence between the Student Association and the Attorney General, President Robert. R Martin, and Vice President of Student Affairs Thomas D. Myers, as well as some general correspondence. Many folders highlight specific university committees and minutes of committee meetings, including the Committee on Academic Affairs, the Committee on Student Rights and Responsibilities, the Committee on Drug Abuse, and many others. There is also a significant amount of information on dormitories and questions of equality regarding Women’s Hours in dormitories. Election information on both EKU elections and voter registration for local, state, and national elections can be found in this collection as well. The Student Senate is also significant to this collection, as a large portion of it includes minutes and motions of student senate meetings. In addition to this, proceedings of the Student Court can be found within the collection.

Folder 1: National Student Lobby, 1972-1973: Contains a fact sheet on basic educational opportunity grants, a voting record and worksheet on house education appropriations, legislative reports from the National Student Lobby, an article on change from the Magazine of Higher Learning, a copy of The Lobby Magazine for Student Lobbyists from a 1973 conference, and reports from the National Student Lobby.
Folder 2: News Releases, 1972-1974: Contains news releases from the Student Association.
Folder 3: Notes on Effective Operation of Student Government, 1973-1974: Contains a copy of an "underground newspaper" titled "The Plain Brown Rapper" regarding the importance of Student Association elections and the power of student senators, a Courier Journal article regarding a code for faculty at UK, and a publication from Steve Slade about the functions of a senator in student government.
Folder 4: Off-Campus Living Survey, 1974-1975: Contains a copy of a student questionairre on off-campus living and an analysis of the results, notes and calculations of questionairre results, information on dorm occupancy statistics, campus living requirements, and information on off-campus housing options in Richmond.
Folder 5: Office of Youth and Student Affairs, 1973: Contains copies of an executive order from the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, copies of newspaper clippings about HEW, and an informational packet on the Office of Youth and Student Affairs.
