Collection Historical Note

James Lane Allen (1849-1925), born and raised near Lexington, Kentucky, is a noted American author who wrote 19 novels, 14 of which took place in Kentucky. Popular titles include Kentucky Cardinal (1894) and The Choir Invisible (1897). He resided in New York after 1893. His style reflects the romantic, sentimental tone popular in late 19th century America; he also satisfied the demand for local color writings with his tales of a vanished, genteel Kentucky.
