Folder 1: Correspondence - Charles Walker to his Parents, 1858-1865

Letters written while he was in the Army. In the March 26 letter to his mother, Charles complains about her silence and that of other family members.  Also includes a letter from Santa Fe, New Mexico in which Walker writes that Madison County has raised a large Union army. Includes a January 12, 1862 letter in which Charles Walker entreats his father to use his influence to get him a promotion. Walker also rights about Clay and the possibility that he will become General. In the same letter, Walker details skirmishes his company has been involved in with General Libley (Confederate). He also write about Bowling Green being a major stake in the fight in Kentucky and mentions that his cousin, Billy Watts is a rebel. Letter of February 24, 1862 details a bloody battle at Fort Craig, New Mexico at which 800 out of 2,000 men were killed (now often called the Gettysburg of the West). Also contains a letter from Miss Churchill to Colonel Charles J. Walker from about 1865. Charles Walker was the son of William Jason and the nephew of Charles Sinclair Watts.

Folder 3: Correspondence - Miscellaneous Walker Family, 1819-1955

Various Walker family correspondence from 1819-1955. Includes letters from 1819 and 1820 from Benjamin Watkins to his nephew, William Walker in Madison County, Kentucky. One letter from Watkins mentions the recent death of his wife. Watkins also asks if his sister, William Walker's mother, is dead as well as his nephew, James Walker. Watkins lists each of his children, who they are married to, the number of children they have, and where they are living. This folder also contains a letter from C.M. Clay to William John Walker in 1862. Letter from Fannie H. Smith to Mr. Walker asking for donations to the Paint Lick Christian Church, of which she was the clerk.

The letters detail the estate of Charles Sinclair Watts as well as the running of William's ranch in Robertson County, Texas.

The letters detail the running of William's ranch in Robertson County, Texas.

Folder 3: To William W. Watts (A-Z)

Includes letters from D.S. Flower about the death of George Watts in 1905. Flower's letters detail how George died and what happened to "Cousin Pet" and the rest of George's family. There is also a letter from Julius Levin written in November 20, 1905 telling William that George was dying. There is also a series of letters from Jno J. Hinds whom William Watts lent money to so that Hinds could go to school. Includes a letter from J.B. Sweeney who William Watts financially assisted. Also has letters from Florence Shelby who William Watts helped go to Vassar College. Also a letter from Bessie Thompson announcing that she has married. There are also several letters from Helen F. Wore who William Watts loaned money to so that she could finish college.

Folder 4: To William W. Watts (Misc)

Includes a letter from William Watts to his mother, a partial letter and letters from individuals with only first names. The letters are about agriculture, politics, and family and friends.

Folder 5: William W. Watts Wallet Contents

Most of the paperwork concerns the sale of land that he owned with Margaret Watts. She sued the estate after his death and all of the checks and bills that he paid for her are in this folder. There is also a letter to William Watts from Margaret's son, Joel Watts about borrowing money.

Folder 6: To Mary P. Watts (A-D)

Includes several sympathy letters for the death of Nannie Embry. Also of note, are two 1890s letters from J. Asa Duprey which details the history of the Duprey family in France and America and its possible ties to the Walker family. Several letters are from merchants and one letter talks about a Walker Endowment to the Pattie A. Clay Infirmary.

Folder 7: To Mary P. Watts (E-K)

Some of the letters are in regards to the death of Mary's sister, Nannie Embry. There are also several letters from a plumbing contractor named James M. Fay about renovation costs for the Elmwood bathroom in 1932 and other renovations are talked about as well. Other letters are about travel to White Sulphur Springs and letters from family with news of friends and family. A letter from Mrs. Irving Halsey mentions a possible trip to Europe for Emma. Letters of special note include: a letter about the death of James B. Parkes, an announcement of pregnancy by a family member, and a letter from R.E.L. Knight Sr. expressing condolences for family deaths.

Folder 8: To Mary P. Watts (L-R)

Most of the letters express condolences for family deaths. Other letters include a prescription from The White Sulfur Springs Medical Department and a 1919 letter from McCord that thanks Mary for referring him to the Knight family. McCord mentions that R.E.L. Knight, Sr. is being mentioned for governor of Texas. Also included is a lively letter from James "Jim" Parkes in which he discusses political tension in Madison County, Kentucky and Mary's dislike of Texas. There is also a letter from Mary's father which talks about life in Kingston, Kentucky and his health.

Folder 9: To Mary P. Watts (S-W)

Included is a July 5, 1929 letter from Annie Shaw that thanks Mary for lending her money to buy a house across the street from 606 E. Main St. There are several later letters that indicate that the loan was repaid. There is also a letter from Geo. H Worthley thanking Mary Watts for "mothering" and escorting his daughter to and through southern Italy.

The letters are all of a personal nature and contain information about family members in Texas, the Knight family, and Elizabeth's daughter, Sarah.

Sarah was the daughter of Elizabeth Dunlop. Most of these letters are thank you notes written for various gifts given by Mary and Emma over several years.

Elise wrote about the condition of her son, Thomas Smith. She claims his symptoms are not caused by alcohol. She also talks of the friends and family.

These letters are all of a personal nature and contain information about the lives of both the Watts and Knight families. This includes one letter from Annie when she was a student at Vassar in 1886.

These letters are all of a personal nature and contain information about the lives of both the Watts and Knight families. Of particular note is one letter in which Annie talks about the death of her son, Robert.

Folder 9: To Mary P. Watts from Henry Coke Knight, 1909-1919

Most of these letters were written during his time in the service in World War I.

The letters detail Miss Knight's trip to Europe as well as community tidbits from both Richmond, Kentucky and Dallas, Texas.

Folder 11: To Mary P. Watts from Richard Knight, 1912-1917

Includes letters about military life, photos sent from Palm Beach, lunch with Cassius Clay, and staying with Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilt. Of special note is a 1926 letter about the death of his brother "Bob" (R.E.L. Knight, Jr.) in which Dick describes his mother's lack of reaction and his father's hair turning white.

Folder 12: To Mary P. Watts from Robert Knight, 1907-1917

The letters offer insight into the events of the Knight family. Robert describes military training in 1917 and expresses that he felt closer to William Watts than he did his own father.

Folder 13: To Mary P. Watts from Tom Knight, 1910-1929

Includes an undated announcement of his engagement and marriage plans. Also includes a few letters about a trip he was planning to Europe.

Folder 14: To Mary P. Watts from Fanny Parkes, 1899

Letters from Cincinnati where Fanny apparently accompanied Emma for a dental visit.

Folder 15: To Mary P. Watts from Fanny [Parkes Smith], 1913

Talks about family and friends. One letter mentions the death of Dr. Taylor.

In the letters, Elise announced her upcoming marriage to a man who works for the Smithsonian who had been sent to China. She also talks about her brother's health and the health of her baby. Also, Tom thanks Mary for presents, describes school in England, and talks about the death of "Uncle Jim" who was most likely James B. Parkes.

Folder 1: To Mary P. Watts from Walker Family, 1912-1929

Most of the letters are from J.J. Walker and his son, Donald Walker. Of particular note is a letter announcing the death of J.J. Walker in June 1924 and an additional letter in which Donald provides details of his father's death. A later letter also states that J.J. Walker left $5,000 to the Patty A. Clay Infirmary in Richmond, Kentucky.

Folder 2: To Mary P. Watts from Joe and Sadie Watts, 1918-1931

The majority of these letters are written from Biloxi, Mississippi, where Joe had a refrigerator company. Of particular note is a May 5, 1918 letter in which Joe mentions the rumored engagement of Emma Watts to Tony Burnam. Also, August 12, 1928 letter written by Sadie announces that Joe was in an accident having to do with ammonia and is likely blind.

The letters are written from Tennessee and contain general information about family members in Tennessee.

Notes of sympathy after the death of her husband William W. Watts.

Folder 5: To Mary P. Watts from Unidentified Last Names

The letters are all of a personal nature; several contain sympathy for the death of her sister and of her husband.

Folder 6: To Mary P. Watts from Unidentified Senders, 1912-1933

Postcard from England about travel itinerary, lists of hotels and plays and a note about Tony Burnam, who they claimed only wanted to marry Emma for her money.

Folder 7: Written by Mary P. Watts

Letters from Mary Watts to various recipients, most are undated. Includes a letter, most likely written in 1928, in which Mary asks the unnamed recipient to intervene in the separation of Dolly and Thomas Smith.

Folder 8: Between Mary P. and William W. Watts, 1878-1904

These were written while William was in Texas handling business affairs. The letters all contain business notes such as what price cotton sold for. Of particular note are: September 13, 1878 letter in which Watts writes about Jo Walker's black cook and other workers leaving because he beat them so badly. Walker could no longer find workers who would stay. September 25, 1878 letter details the amount of labor used to pick cotton and the average number of bales picked each day. Finally, an October 3, 1878 letter mentions Mr. Armstrong getting drunk. December 3, 1879, Watts writes that northern Texas was experiencing population loss. Cattle hands were abandoning it for Kansas. December 22, 1879, Tom Armstrong talked about making Watts Annie Armstrong's legal guardian. Tom was prone to drinking and was afraid he would squander her inheritance. December 23, 1879, Watts writes a brief note about the murder of Bob Little by "Arnold." He also gained guardianship for Annie and was given $500 for her and the right to rent out the land she owned. December 29, 1879, Watts mentions that the trial of Arnold should have started. He calls Arnold a "demon" and hopes people will rise up and hang him. Also includes letters from a trip Mary and Emma took to Europe. They contain small notes about what had been happening in Richmond, Kentucky while they were gone. Of particular note is a February 2, 1908 letter in which William expresses concern about the kind of people Emma and Mary are associating with while doing charity work. He also mentions the elopement of Mr. Kennedy (Jo's son) to the butcher's daughter.

Folder 9: Between Mary P. and William W. Watts, 1908-1912

The early letters were written when W.W. Watts was on a cattle drive in Texas. The later letters detail Mary P. Watts and Emma Watts' trip to Europe in 1911.

Folder 10: Letters between William, Mary, and Emma, 1894-1911

The letters include personal glimpses into their lives while he was in Texas. Includes a number of letters from Cincinnati where Emma is having extensive dental work done. In other letters Emma talks about trips, shopping and activities while she is traveling. One letter documents an early visit to Vassar and states that she will be accepted in three years after she is 18. Later correspondence details Emma's trip to Europe with her mother in 1911.

This folder consists of letters written to individuals associated with the Watts family. These individuals either stayed at Elmwood for extended periods of time or the letters were shared with the Watts family. Other correspondence in the collection verifies extended stays of friends and family and mentions enclosed letters from other individuals. Of note is a letter from Lottie who was in Turkey in 1906. She attached photos of women and babies she came into contact with and her letter has vivid descriptions of the life of women in Turkey at the time. Several letters are from the Knight children and a couple relate to Stone Walker.

Correspondence between William Watts and various Texans. The letters contain information about leasing lands, cattle, and local gossip. Included is a letter from Thomas Moore in Texas about possibly selling Mrs. Johnson's land. Watts had already purchased a portion of it. Mrs. Johnson married on June 15, 1876 to John Tarleton, who is mentioned as being a wealthy man. Johnson and Tarleton signed a marriage contract keeping their assets separate.

Letters from various locations in Texas about Watts' property there. Most of the letters are from E. Wilson in Sutton, Texas about the sale of Watts' cotton in Sutton, Texas. Also lists corn and oats among the other crops.

Folder 3: Texas, 1890-1896

Correspondence between William Watts and various men in Texas. Includes a contract for convict labor for the years 1892-1893. In 1895, Watts received several letters from E.B. Covington (a lawyer) who purchased and leased lands for Watts. In 1895, there were also several letters from William Harrell who was a cattle agent for Watts.

Contains correspondence to William Watts about the buying and selling of land in Texas. Of special note are letters from D.L. Phillips about the buying and selling of cattle and the upkeep of Z-L Ranch.

February 2, 1914 letter from B.W. Mitchell detailing an automobile accident that Lackey was involved in and that killed one man. Also contains correspondence about the general running of the Texas properties, including lease agreements. Includes letters between Emma Watts and S. H. Packer, R. H. Moss, and Lamar Acker about the building of a levee.

Correspondence about Texas properties. Includes a letter in which Mary Watts complains about the cost of poisoning prairie dogs, which was required by law. Also has correspondence about leasing a section of land from Clara Starr.

Folder 7: Texas, 1917

Correspondence with several men about the possible sale of Z-L Ranch. Many of the letters are from realtors wishing to have Mary Watts list the land with them. Her reply was always that she would sell the land herself, without a realtor. There are also several letters in which Mary seeks the advice of R.E.L. Knight, Sr. There is also significant correspondence between Mary Watts and several men about how and when to kill prairie dogs. This folder contains correspondence regarding the Watts' Texas properties including the killing of prairie dogs and the sale of the land. Correspondence between Clara Starr and Mary Watts about the price of complying with prairie dog law.  June 19, 1917 letter from R.E.L. Knight Sr. to Mary Watts about the sale of her land and the drought conditions in Texas. Knight also mentions that his sons are currently in a military camp and that he is on the State Defense Council.  June 30, 1917 letter from Mary Watts to R.E.L. Knight, Sr. about the death of Mr. Moss in Robertson County. Also talks about a lawsuit brought against her by McCloud in Texas. There is also a letter from December 6, 1917 in which Mary confirms that she sold the Z-L Ranch property to Frank Corn who owned neighboring land.

Folder 8: Correspondence Concerning Texas Properties, 1918-1920

Includes Jan 24, 1918 letter from Mary Watts to B.W. Mitchell, apparently responding to a letter in which he claimed she had promised to sell some land to him.  She claims that he never mentioned this at all and would never have considered selling Z-L Ranch in sections, only as a whole. Also includes correspondence about a Quit-Claim Deed that was needed from the Walkers.

Correspondence about Texas properties, mostly between James B. Parkes and J. Moss, who leased the land.  Includes letters in 1921 from R.E.L. Knight, Sr. to Mary Watts about the poor state of the Brazos Basin area. The area had been hit hard by droughts and bad weather and many tenants were unable to make rent. Also a September 17, 1921 letter from R.E.L. Knight, Sr. to Mary Watts about the damage caused by a flood when a levee broke on her property.

Correspondence about Texas properties, mostly between James B. Parkes and J. Moss, who leased the land.  Of note is a January 20, 1923 letter from R.E.L. Knight, Sr. about the foreclosure of land that was formerly the Z-L Ranch. The new owner, Frank Corn, was foreclosed upon but still owed money to Mary Watts.

Most of the correspondence is between Emma Watts and John Nigliazzo. Nigliazzo leased Emma Watts' land in Robertson County, Texas during this time. The letters detail improvements to the property and a fire that burned down one of the houses. Also includes a 1967 letter from Marion A. Knight to John Nigliazzo telling him that the Undersecretary of Agriculture in Mexico might be contacting him about agriculture.
