Scope and Contents of the Materials

Correspondence from friends serving in the Army and Army Air Corps during WWII along with propaganda leaflets and a silk flag. Also included are Christmas cards from friends, most notably from author, A. L. Crabb and family. There is also some official EKU Library correspondence regarding the John Wilson Townsend Collection and other items that were added to the library collections over the years.

Biographical Note

Mary Floyd was a native of Pulaski County and taught in the public schools of Somerset, Campbellsville and Louisville for several years. She came to Eastern State College, first as student and then as teacher, in the early 1920s, serving as a professor of history and as college librarian from 1929 until her retirement in 1957.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Cecilian Music Club and the Woman's Club. She held memberships in a number of professional organizations, including the American Association of University Women, the American Library Association and the Kentucky Library Association which she served for a term as director.

She held academic degrees from Eastern, the University of Chicago nd Columbia University.

Correspondence with various individuals mostly relating to the Eastern library collections. Sometimes copies of her outgoing correspondence are also included allowing the researcher to gather a more complete discussion of the topic. One letter in particular that relates to the John W. Townsend Collection also talks about the financial hardships being faced by Eastern at the onset of the Great Depression.
