Scope and Contents of the Materials
This is an artificial collection created to provide access to single items relating to Jesse Stuart. The core of the collection was part of the Townsend Room Collections, but other items have been added as found. The materials include a scrapbook on Jesse Stuart, an audio tape of his funeral, correspondence from Jesse Stuart to various individuals, autobiography, biographical notes and news clippings.
Biographical Note
Jesse Hilton Stuart (August 8, 1906 - February 17, 1984) was an American writer, school teacher, and school administrator who is known for his short stories, poetry, and novels as well as non-fiction autobiographical works set in central Appalachia. Born and raised in Greenup County, Kentucky, Stuart relied heavily on the rural locale of northeastern Kentucky for his writings.[1] Stuart was named the poet laureate of Kentucky in 1954.
