Scope and Contents of the Materials
J.W. Gay collected photographs of family and friends, certificates important to him, and a photo compilation. Several photographs, including the compilation Atlantic City Views, offer a glimpse of fashions ranging from 1890 to 1920. The Gay Papers include photographs of the Gay, Prewitt, Chenault, and Spears family members. Also included are photographs given as gifts to J.W. Gay from fraternity members.
Biographical Note
The Gay family intertwines with the Prewitt, Chenault, and Woodford families. Lucy Caroline Prewitt married James D. Gay and together they had five children. Among those children were Nelson and William. They would go on to marry Lila Chenault and Margaret Woodford respectively. Nelson and Lila's son, James Dunlap Gay (b. 1901), was drafted into WWI. William and Margaret had four children; Callie, Nannie, Elizabeth, and J. Woodford Gay (b. 1902), after whom this collection is named. Woodford carried on the family occupation of farmer until his death in 1931.
