Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains materials from the biannual Living with Animals Conference held by the Animal Studies program of EKU. Some of these books are solely of photography, whereas some are sculptures meant to be interpreted as a book.

Collection Historical Note

Living with Animals Conference is a conference held every two years at EKU, starting in 2013. The conference is presented by the Animal Studies Program in the EKU Department of Psychology. Living with Animals is co-organized by the program's co-directors, Dr. Robert W. Mitchell and Dr. Radhika N. Makecha. The Animal Studies program studies human and animal interactions in a variety of means, from psychology to art. In this collection the art aspect of this program is predominantly showcased by the means of artist books. These books rely on the reader's interpretation and feelings they get when reading or looking at the book. There are a variety of themes in these books, all showcasing what Animal Studies is about. Some themes cover the history of the clothing industry in using animal fur, some showcase animal cognition studies.

The conference covers a new theme each year, along with a continuation of a "Living with Horses" track. Past themes have been topics such as, "Seeing with Animals" and "Teaching with Animals." Each conference has keynote speakers as well as other speakers, book displays, and poster displays.
