Historical Note: Alben William Barkley (1877-1956), a native of Graves County, Kentucky, served as a Kentucky congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives (1913-1927), a U.S. senator (1927-1949) and as vice president of the United States (1949-1953). A Democrat who was well known for for his speaking abilities, he became one of the most powerful leaders in the Senate during the 1930s and 1940s.
