Historical Note: Hartwell D. "Jack" Reed was a native of Frankfort, Ky., and a graduate of the University of Kentucky and its law school. He served in the Army Air Forces in the Atlantic during World War II. He was assistant attorney general of Kentucky from 1949 to 1954 and again from 1957 to 1959. He came to Washington initially in 1954, to be legislative counsel to Sen. Earle C. Clements (D-Ky.), and later worked for a House agriculture subcommittee. He worked for the House Committee on Education and Labor for 23 years, helping to draft social legislation that included the Economic Opportunity, Elementary and Secondary Education and Comprehensive Employment and Training acts. He retired from that position in 1984 and died at his home in Sarasota, FL July 16, 1994. (Information taken from his obituary in the Washington Post, 17 Jul 1994.)
