Scope and Contents of the Materials

The McCready-Bolton Family Papers are essentially an artificial collection consisting of correspondence, photographs, two diaries, scrapbooks, original writing/publications, artifacts, newspaper clippings, and genealogical records brought together from a variety of sources. The papers are arranged chronologically in two areas: The Family of Rev. William George McCready and his wife Margaret Anne French McCready, and The Family of John Cleveland Bolton and Mary Elizabeth Bennett Bolton. The material has been divided into 17 series representing different or extended branches of the families. The collection focuses on these extended, but inter-connected Kentucky families over several generations including their varied professions (law, business, real estate, home making, and community involvement). A brief description of each series follows:

Series

John McCready (1862-1963) genealogical information on the McCready family that emigrated from Ireland to America including Rev. William George McCready’s parents, John and Janet. A photograph of a painting of John McCready is included.

William George McCready [WGM] (1854-1940) biographical information of his adulthood, correspondence, and information on his cousin Rev. Richard Lightburne McCready.

Margaret Anne (French) McCready [MAFM] (1868-1948) photographs as a child, youth and adult; correspondence with her mother and four sisters; correspondence at time of husband’s and son’s deaths; correspondence with her grown children and their spouses.

The Moore and French Families (1740-1940) genealogical information, photographs, and correspondence of Margaret Anne (French) McCready’s grandparents, parents, and siblings of Clark County, KY area.

Charles Stephen French McCready (1915-1994) the oldest child of Rev. WGM & MAFM, information on his life in business (Ocala, FL real estate), his three wives and their families, civic project involvement. Includes photos, correspondence, clippings, scrapbooks.

John Dudley McCready (1894-2000) the second child of Rev. WGM & MAFM, information on his childhood and youth, his churches, sermons, published writings, his service as a chaplain during WWII. Also included are photographs, newspaper articles and correspondence regarding his wife, Mary Winston, and children. A time line of his life is included. The Southern Baptist Historical Library has a collection of John Dudley and Mary Winston (Martin) McCready Papers.

Emily Irvine McCready (1896-1971) the third child of Rev. WGM & MAFM, photographs of her childhood, youth and adulthood, correspondence with siblings and friends, genealogical research and writings on the Winchester, KY area.

William George McCready, Jr. (1899-1918) the fourth child of Rev. WGM & MAFM includes a photograph as a teen. Also see correspondence received by his mother at the time of his death.

Margaret Calloway (McCready) Blake (1911-2000) the fifth child of Rev. WGM & MAFM, includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper articles of her husband, Charles and children, Charles and Anne, in Lexington, MA.

Richard French McCready (1913-1992) the sixth child of Rev. WGM & MAFM includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper articles of him as a Winchester, KY businessman, his wife Dolly and their son Richard, Jr.

Richard French McCready, Jr. (1941-2003) the only child and son of Richard French and Dolly Toole McCready. His childhood, schooling, and adulthood as a lawyer in Winchester, KY. Also included are his wife, Jane C. Houston and daughters Sarah and Louise.

Henley Moore McCready (1910-1976) the seventh (and youngest) child of Rev. WGM & MAFM includes information on his childhood and in the insurance business. Also, his WWII service and involvement musically in Winchester, KY.

Faye Wilson (Bolton) McCready (1916-1993) the wife of Henley Moore McCready includes information on her childhood, youth, and adulthood including photographs, news clippings, a diary, scrapbooks, and church music involvement in Winchester, KY Henley Moore and Faye Wilson (Bolton) McCready (1938-1993) their home in Winchester, KY, correspondence and travels.

Margaret French (McCready) Cornell (1938-2000) only daughter of Henley Moore and Faye Bolton McCready includes her childhood and adulthood in Kentucky and New England. Also included are her husband, Gary, and children Elizabeth and Andrew.

John Bennett McCready (1940-2008) only son of Henley Moore & Faye Bolton McCready includes his papers and photographs on his childhood and adulthood in Ormand Beach, FL. Also included is his wife, Margaret, and children Emily, Stephen, and Preston.

John Cleveland Bolton and Mary Elizabeth (Bennett) Bolton (1800-1996) the parents of Faye Wilson Bolton McCready who resided in Owensboro (Daviess Co), KY, genealogical information including photographs, correspondence, and a Civil War diary.
