Collection Overview
Scope and Contents of the Materials
Robert Earl Lanter enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and much of this collection consists of correspondence with friends and family during his service in World War II in the Pacific Theater. Besides the war correspondence there are also letters to various women he dated, materials relating to his and his father's business, and documentation of his final years in a nursing home and his death and estate settlement.
Biographical Note
Robert Lanter was born in Richmond, KY and traveled to various locations throughout his life. While a teenager, he and his family moved to DeLand, FL, but they later moved back to Richmond at which point Robert enlisted in the United States Navy. He served on a patrol craft in the Pacific theater near the end of the war, and he continued to work for military companies after his discharge. He and his father also operated their own automotive repair business for nearly 20 years in Richmond. He was an avid collector of rare coins and weapons, and he also enjoyed photography and developing his own photos along with metal detecting.

- Folder 2: Memo Pads, 1965-1967
- These memo pads contain a variety of information that was recorded by Robert Lanter. There is contact information for friends and colleagues, notes about work at Grand Turk, remembrances about happenings in Richmond and elsewhere, and there is financial records for trips and vacations.
- Folder 3: Lanter Motor Company Accounting Booklets, 1973-1977
- These account books show financial activities of Lanter Motor Co. Most of it has to do with payroll information, but there is also bank account information within.
- Folder 4: WWII Ration Booklets, 1943-1944
- These ration booklets were issued to the Lanter family during the second world war. Included are booklets for Preston, Lou Ann, and Barbara Lanter.
- Folder 5: Gifted New Testament, 1952
- This Bible was a Christmas present to Robert Lanter from Kay Hooper who lived in Florida. Inside the cover is a note of dedication to Robert from Kay.
- Folder 6: Cased Photographs
- These items are framed/cased daguerreotypes with a couple exceptions which are noted item-by-item.
