Scope and Contents of the Materials
John R. Pates was a conductor on the Richmond, Nicholasville, Irvine, and Beattyville Railroad (Riney-B) which was later purchased by the Louisville & Atlantic Railroad. These papers include a scrapbook, train time tables, correspondence and report cards for his son who attended Model School. The scrapbook is composed of many news clippings about the Riney-B railroad during the time he worked as conductor and superintendent.
Biographical Note
John R. Pates (1866-1941), was an employee of the Riney-B Railroad. He was the conductor for many years and was promoted to superintendent in 1904. He was well known and well liked throughout the communities that he was a part of, along with his family. He was married to Eva McGinn and they had two children together, Jeanette Pates and John R. Pates Jr.

- 14 letters and notes expressing congratulations for the appointment of Pates to "Superintendent with jurisdiction over the Operating Department, including the Mechanical, Roadway and Transportation Departments." One memo, a year later, transfers Pates to the Richmond office.
