The personal and official papers of John Vickers comprise 13 boxes of materials covering the years 1958(1960)-1977. Mr. Vickers held a variety of important administrative positions, (such as Executive Assistant to President Robert R. Martin and Director of the Placement Office) during his tenure at Eastern Kentucky University (1960-1977).
These papers reflect Vickers' active interest in such professional educational organizations as the Kentucky Educational Association and the Central Kentucky Education Association. His role in organizing various campus conferences and activities such as cheerleader workshops, homecoming events, and MCA meetings is fully documented. There is a sizeable quantity of personal correspondence concerning Vickers' active interest in Eastern athletes and his leadership in local and state Baptist church matters.
John Landes Vickers was born at Rumsey, Kentucky in McLean County on November 1, 1907. He graduated from Calhoun High School and received a B. S. degree in Agriculture from Western Kentucky University in 1931 and a M. A. degree in Administration and Agricultural Education from the University of Kentucky in 1935.
After graduation he taught vocational education agriculture and coached athletics in several secondary schools of Kentucky until 1943 when he began work for the U. S. Department of Agriculture. From 1946 to 1950 he served as principal of Pleasureville High School in Henry County, Kentucky. In 1950 he assumed position of Director of Pupil Transportation for the Kentucky Department of Education. He held that position until 1960 when he caine to Eastern Kentucky University.
From 1960 to 1977 Vickers held several significant administrative positions at Eastern. At various times he served as Executive Assistant to President Robert R. Martin, Director of College - Community Relations, and Director of Placement from 1968 until his retirement in 1977. Vickers assisted in organizing numerous campus events and workshops during his tenue at Eastern and on many occasions served as Eastern's official representative to state and national educational events.
Vickers is active in professional educational organizations. He holds life membership in the Kentucky Education Association and the National Education Association. He was a member of the Kentucky Association of School Administrators. In retirement he has assisted in the continued development of the Madison County Retired Teachers Association. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond and the Richmond Rotary Club. Vickers was married to the former Lois Robinson of Lexington, Kentucky and they had three sons and one daughter.
