Scope and Contents of the Materials
A letter from the president of Yale acknowledging that Jonathan Jones Howard has completed all the required studies necessary in the medical school and is awarded a Doctor of Medicine. An accompanying letter from Mrs. Katherine Phelps Caperton gives some history of the Howard family and a list of all Madison County graduates of Yale University.
Collection Historical Note
Jonathan Jones Howard was born in Madison County, KY in 1827 and died in 1854. He was the son of Christopher Howard and Rebecca Jones and married Sallie A. Fowler shortly after his graduation from Yale. After his death she remarried and was widowed again and then married the father of George W. Phelps.
