Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of manuscript materials that were collected by the Dorris Museum. Some of the collection has been processed either as individual collections or has been added to other artificial collections as appropriate. The items inventoried here are just a small percentage of a collection that had a worldwide scope. Dr. Dorris collected any materials that he found to be interesting without regard to subject. Other materials will be added to this inventory as identified and processed.

Item 1: Benedict Coal Corporation: St. Charles, VA, consists of six coins in denominations of 5 cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, fifty cents, one dollar, and five dollars.
Item 2: Black Star Coal Corporation: Alva, KY, consists of two coins in denominations of one cent and five cents.
Item 3: Blue Diamond Coal Co.: Bonny Blue, VA, consists of three different versions of one cent coins.
Item 4: Creech Coal Co.: Twila, KY, consists of one twenty-five cent coin.
Item 5: Crummies Creek Coal Co.: Crummies, KY, consists of eleven coins in two sets. One set is aluminum and coins are in denominations of one cent, ten cents, twenty-five cents, fifty cents, and one dollar, with the value of one coin illegible. The other set is a heavier metal and coins are in denominations of five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, fifty cents, and one dollar.
Item 6: C.E. Flanery Store: Consists of five coins in denominations of five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, fifty cents, and one dollar.

Includes: St. Cecilia's Day: A Cantata (undated), Song of the Bell: A Cantata (undated), The Songs of Bonnie Scotland (undated), New Life for Our Sunday School (1880), Untitled Hymns (undated, mostly by John Campbell), and Untitled Dance Music (undated). Several volumes are in the Sol-fa or solfege style of music notation. (Accession #s N.26.1-6)

Folder 7: Memoirs and Biographies, 1888

Includes: Memoir of Thomas H. Patoo (undated and incomplete), Lovejoy: An Address Delivered by Thomas Dimmick (1888 and possibly incomplete), and Elijah P. Lovejoy, Martry (undated). (Accession #s N.95, N.94.1-2) Also typescripts of "Autobiography of Rev. James B. Finley" and "Autobiography of William Parks" (African American). The originals of these items have not been located.

Hand-woven bedcover that belonged to Mrs. John Proctor.

Folder 17: S.A.D. Jones Documents, 1886

Includes a teaching contract for Jones (1886), a deposition in the court case Commonwealth vs. J.M. Bowman, S.A.D. Jones and R.F. Harkin on S.A.D. Jones, Judge of Barbourville City Court letterhead (after 1890) and a list individuals present at the hearing (after 1890). (Accession #s N.103, N.83.3)
