Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Willard Rouse Jillson Papers feature only a few of his more than 300 publications. They include local histories, bibliographies, geological treatises on Kentucky locations and volumes on Kentucky books. Included in each is the handwritten or typed draft and a proof from the publisher with changes noted throughout. One volume is a typescript of a deposition he gave regarding a mudslide on Highway 23. Two volumes include a carbon copy of an acknowledgement letter to Jillson from Eastern librarian, Mary Floyd.
Biographical Note
Willard Rouse Jillson (May 28, 1890 – October 4, 1975) was a Kentucky historian academic, and geologist who authored numerous books on Kentucky politicians and geology matters pertaining to the State. Jillson taught geology in Lexington at the University of Kentucky in 1918 and later at Transylvania University in 1947. He served in various government positions, notably as Kentucky State Geologist and director of the Sixth Kentucky Geological Survey.
