Collection Overview
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Keith W. Johnson Theatrical Designs collection documents the Eastern Kentucky University theater program from 1976 through 2003. Mr. Johnson was responsible for the set design of all theater productions during that time period and these papers consist of his original drawings, blueprints, images and play programs. The images are of sets as well as those taken during performances. The photographs should be supplemented with the EKU Negative Collection, which also includes thousands of images of these plays. Programs for the productions should be supplemented with the EKU Ephemera collection.
The collection also contains slides and ephemera from some of Johnson's earlier work at Millikin University and with other theater companies.
Biographical Note
Keith Johnson was a native of Ashland, KY and got his start in theater when he attended Ashland Community College. He later transferred to Eastern Kentucky University where he got a bachelor of arts degree in drama. Johnson worked in the theater in various capacities and taught at Millikin University for three years. In 1976 he returned to Eastern to teach and received his master's in fine arts from the University of Cincinnati in 1979. Johnson designed sets for Eastern theater productions until his retirement in 2003.
