Collection Historical Note
Daniel Cox (11 Apr 1805 - 16 Mar 1888) was born in Madison County to Thomas (17 Oct 1772 - 12 Aug 1844) and Mildred (Milly) Cox (20 Mar 1774 - 1 Feb 1859). He was the fourth of nine children. Daniel's first marriage was to Margaret Black (? - 7 Feb 1850) on 20 Oct 1831. Margaret was the daughter of Andrew Black and Nancy McWilliams Black. Daniel and Margaret had four children:
1. Elizabeth Cox (31 Jul 1832 - 28 Mar 1906) was married to John Davis on 14 Jun 1849.
2. Archabale [Archibald] Cox (29 Aug 1837 - 5 Aug 1841).
3. Nancy Ann Cox (26 Nov 1843 - ?) was married to William Harber on 10 Nov 1859.
4. Dillard Cox (27 May 1845 - 24 Sep 1905) married Mollie Cobb on 1 Mar 1870.
After Margaret's death Daniel married Minerva Black (1814 - 31 Mar 1888), Margaret's younger sister, on 5 Sep 1850. They had two children:
5. Emily (Emma) Cox (28 May 1857 - 14 Sep 1884) married James Noland of Madison County on 17 Dec 1873.
6. An unknown male who was born in 1852. No other information can be found.
The Cox and Black families were original members of the White Oak Pond Church which is situated on Goggin's Lane and Barnes Mill Road. Daniel Cox and his family lived on Four Mile Road and owned land running near Otter Creek. Four Mile Road was originally a dirt road called Four Mile Avenue which ran northeast from Richmond. In 1907 it was piked (made into a toll road) and called Four Mile Road. Daniel lived on his land until his death in March of 1888, and Minerva died later the same month.
Records show that the Cox family early pioneers lived in Pine Grove and owned a great deal of land.
