Scope and Contents of the Materials

Aimee Hines Alexander was an associate professor at Eastern Kentucky University from 1961-1983 in the Department of English. This collection includes documents regarding the various committees Alexander served on during her time at EKU. These include meeting minutes and rules and activities for the student organizations she was involved with. These organizations include Greek life and honors societies on campus. Dr. Alexander's role in the national Higher Education Act of 1966 are also documented in the collection.

Collection Historical Note

Aimee Frances Hines Alexander was born May 1, 1919 in Wayne County, Kentucky to Clyde Greshem and Fannie Broun Hines. Both of her parents were educators in Pulaski County and Monticello, Kentucky, before eventually teaching at Eastern State College. Aimee Alexander graduated from Harrodsburg High School before attending Transylvania University where she earned an A.B. in English and History. She married Richard Alexander Jr. on October 7, 1940. When World War II was announced Richard volunteered for the Marine Corps. Richard died serving on Marshall Island in January 1945. Their first child, Sandra Jane Alexander, was born on December 31, 1945. Aimee began her teaching career at Harrodsburg High School in 1942. During her time teaching high school, Aimee received a M.A. degree English from the University of Kentucky and did graduate work at Columbia University, Peabody College, and Eastern Kentucky University. She began teaching at EKU in 1961 and continued to do so until 1983. During her time at EKU she was on various committees including Student Affairs and the Student Organizations Committee. She also was a contributing factor in the amending of the national Higher Education Act in Kentucky.
