Abstract
This collection includes letters, documents, and newspaper clippings from the time in which Dr. Aughtum Howard served as a faculty memeber at both Kentucky Wesleyan College and Eastern Kentucky University.
Scope and Contents of the Materials
Dr. Aughtum Howard kept many documents and letters from her time at both Kentucky Wesleyan College and Eastern Kentucky University. Along with some interesting pieces of her life outside of teaching, including her family’s World War II ration books, Sunday School lessons, and original poetry, the collection includes letters and documents showcasing her time as a faculty member and a member of the organizations she took part in. Information can be found on Kentucky Wesleyan College reports, Dr. Howard’s time as co-sponsor of the Eastern Kentucky University Class of 1967, and meetings of the Kentucky Association of Colleges, Secondary, and Elementary Schools. A large portion of this collection relates to the Mathematical Association of America, including information on meetings, traveling speakers, mathematical papers and speeches, and contributions to the American Mathematical Monthly. There is also a significant amount of information regarding the American Association of University Professors, specifically relating to Dr. Howard’s role in the Curriculum Study Committee. Newspaper clippings involving articles on Dr. Howard, the Kentucky Wesleyan Lyceum Committee, the AAUP Powell Committee Report, and other education related topics are included in this collection as well.
Collection Historical Note
Dr. Aughtum Howard was born in 1906 in Alma, Kentucky. After earning her B.A. from Georgetown University in 1926, as well as her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1938 and 1942, Dr. Aughtum Howard was employed as an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1942. In September of 1958, Dr. Howard accepted a job as an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Eastern Kentucky University, where she remained teaching until her retirement in 1972. During her time at Kentucky Wesleyan and Eastern Kentucky University, she fulfilled leadership roles in numerous organizations, including the Mathematical Association of America, the American Association of University Professors, the Kentucky Association of Church-Related Colleges, and the Kentucky Association of Colleges, Secondary, and Elementary Schools.

- Contains two journals kept by Dr. Aughtum Howard. Pages contain handwritten and typed accounts of visiting different schools for the Curriculum Study Committee. Accounts focus on what curriculum is taught and observations about the schools.
- Folder 2: Miscellaneous Eastern Correspondence, 1961-1970
- Contains letters addressed to and sent by Dr. Aughtum Howard covering topic including an invitation to speak at the Women's Club, Founders Day awards, the Summer Institute of Mathematics, textbook errors, a speech by Dean Barr, teacher certification in the state of Kentucky, elementary school instruction improvement, and an article in The American Scientist.
- Folder 3: Instruction Improvement, 1962-1963
- Contains correspondence regarding a meeting of the Central Kentucky ASCD District on curriculum improvement and Dr. Aughtum Howard's attendance as a resource person. Also contains invitations to the ASCD meeting, a program for the meeting, and suggestions for group discussions on curriculum improvement. Also contains correspondence regarding Dr. Howard speaking at a Teachers' Conference in Letcher County, a program and group schedule for the Teachers' Conference focusing on the improvement of instruction, and two reports on improving oral and written communication.
- Folder 4: AAUP- Committee on Faculty Participation in Administration, 1962-1964
- Contains a statement of principles approved by the council of the AAUP regarding university faculty, a report of the committee on faculty participation in college and university government, a paper written by T.L. Arterberry on faculty participation in college administration, a speech given by Dr. Aughtum Howard on faculty in administration at Alice Lloyd Junior College, a and a speech given by Dr. Howard to students of Alice Lloyd College.
- Folder 5: National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 1962-1972
- Contains a letter to Eastern president, Dr. Robert R. Matin, requesting permission to attend a session of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, a letter to the council regarding a change in a journal, and a letter from the membership supervisor of the organization acknowledging Dr. Aughtum Howard's Life Membership payment to the council.
- Folder 6: Governor's Conference on Higher Education, 1963
- Contains newspaper clippings focusing on the Governor's Conference on Higher Education, correspondence regarding registration for the conference, a program from the conference, a copy of "Within Our Reach: Highlights from the Report of the Commission on Goals for Higher Education in the South," and a booklet of proceedings from the Governor's Conference on Higher Education, and a copy of "A Foundation Program for Public Higher Education in Kentucky."
- Folder 7: Operation Eastern Kentucky, 1963
- Contains announcements and letters regarding flooding in Eastern Kentucky and relief efforts through donations to Operation Eastern Kentucky.
- Folder 8: EKU Student Class Papers- Freshmen, 1963-1964
- Contains correspondence regarding Dr. Aughtum Howard's role as co-sponsor of EKU's freshaman class, handwritten notes relating to the freshmen class, a seating arrangment for freshmen orientation, a speech given to the freshman class by Dr. Howard, newspaper clipping relating the the freshmen class and freshmen class officers, lists of freshmen class officers and council members, announcements for a Mardi Gras dance, a list of Mardi Gras queen nominations, papers regarding Sunday afternoon coffee hours hosted by freshmen to meet faculty, a newspaper clipping about freshman-faculty coffee hours, the constitution of the freshman class, and a list of activities carried out by the freshmen class in the 1963-1964 school year.
- Folder 9: Library Self-Study Committee, 1963-1965
- Contains a list of committees for self-study for the Southern Association, faculty bulletins, correspondence regarding the libray self-study committee, steering committee meeting minutes and memos, correspondence regarding an otuline of the approach taken by the library self-study committee, surveys gathered for the study, reports on findings of the library self-study committee, evaluations of library holdings, and reports on individual sections of the library.
- Folder 10: EKU Student Class Papers- Sophomores, 1964-1965
- Contains flyers andpapers with information regarding sophomore class officer candidates, handwritten meeting minutes for sophomore class meetings, lists of endorsements for sophomore class officer positions, the constitution of the sophomore class, and a list of activities carried out by the sophomore class in the 1964-1965 school year. Also contains correspondence regarding class officer pictures, homecoming floats, a sophomore class social committee, and a student cheering section at basketball games.

- Contains correspondence regarding Dr. Aughtum Howard's rank in The Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels, the correct spelling of Dr. Howard's name, and further information on being a Kentucky Colonel.

- Contains corresponence regarding junior class officers, correspondence and informational memos on a junior class activity weekend, activity weekend schedules, flyers for activity weekend events, rules for activity weekend, an official score sheet for activity weekend, invoices for supplies, and handwritten meeting minutes and attendance of the junior class.

- Contains a student activity account signature card, a hanbook for treasurers of student organizations, a letter to the editor of the Eastern Progress, and a copy of the Eastern Commentator.

- Contains a list of elected officers of the senior class, correspondence regarding a bill remaining from the junior class, correspondence regarding class rings, a request for two members of the senior class to serve on the social committee, meeting announcements, a Student Organizations Newsletter, correspondence and flyers regarding a senipr class gift, the senior class constitution, meeting minutes for senior class meetings, and a list of activities put on by the senior class in the 1966-1967 school year.
