Scope and Contents of the Materials

The materials in this collection demonstrate the development of the KCPT/KY PTA as an organization and the evolving goals of the organization over time. Consistent with the aims of the organization, one can find material that focuses primarily on the well-being of children in terms of education, health, and safety. The collection consists mostly of meeting minutes, annual reports, and bulletins which kept the public up to date on the activities of the organization. The collection also contains several scrapbooks which highlight the activities of both the state organization and smaller district organizations within their respective communities. Other materials represented in the collection are award records, convention materials, training materials, and miscellaneous outreach materials used by the organization.

Collection Historical Note

The “Kentucky State Branch of the National Congress of Mothers and Parent Teacher Associations” was organized on April 24, 1918. Its charter was granted on April 27. The aim of the group has historically been to advocate for children and youth - this means emphasizing the importance of the health, education, and safety of each child in the region. Additionally, the organization seeks to emphasize the involvement of parents and other groups and organizations that support the youth. In the 1960s, a “Headquarters Fund” was established as the group sought to create their own Kentucky PTA state office. The state office finally opened in the 1990s. Since then, the organization continues to work with local groups, state legislators, and parents to ensure the health, education, and well-being of Kentucky children.
