Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Lambert/Harrison Family Papers highlights the lives of several members of the family but focuses on Dean Warren Lambert. The collection features an emphasis on Dean's interest in politics, military affairs, foreign language, history, and the many clubs and organizations that he was involved with. This emphasis can be seen in his correspondence, his collected publications, his photos, and his personal writings. Lambert was invested in his community - he wrote histories of Berea and participated in various community groups and clubs, such as the Berea Players or the Bluegrass Boys' State.
Regarding other members of the Lambert/Harrison family, Dean's mother (May Harrison), aunt (Elizabeth "Bessie" Harrison), and grandfather (John G. Harrison) are present in correspondence, memorandum books, collected publications, financial papers, and educational papers.
Collection Historical Note
Dean Warren Lambert was born in 1927 in Fairfax, South Dakota, but was raised in Berea, KY by his mother, May Harrison. He went on to get his bachelor's degree from Berea College in 1948. He received his masters degree and doctorate degree from University of Kentucky. He worked for the Berea Citizen paper and served as a clerk for Hon. Francis Case (State Representative - South Dakota). Finally, he joined Berea College as a history faculty member in 1953 where he specialized in Russian history and U.S. Civil War history. Dean was involved with many clubs and organizations such as Bluegrass Boys’ State, the Berea Players, the Berea Cemetery Association, and he was a founding member of the Madison County Civil War Roundtable. In 1995, Dean published When the Ripe Pears Fall: The Battle of Richmond, Kentucky, a history of the Civil War in Richmond, Kentucky. This work is also available in our archives. Dean passed away in 2002 and is buried in Berea, KY.

- Includes materials related to Dean's time working summers with Camp Piomingo. Includes instructions to staff, staff board meeting questions, advertisments for people interested in working for the camp, and an empty "My Vacation at Camp" booklet.

- Includes certificates, most of which belong to Dean. The first certificate belongs to J.G. Harrison, his teaching certification. Other certificates belong to Dean, related to his education and club/organization involvement.

- Contains materials related to education. Includes some written report cards for May Harrison, Dean's mother. Remaining materials include report cards and Dean's Office Time Sheets for Dean.

- Contains a book belonging to Bessie Harrison during her time at Berea College. The book, "Public Speaking for Normal and Academy Students" is heavily annotated, with some class notes in between the pages. The date has been lost to damage, but can be read as "Sept 18, 191_"

- Includes invites and event programs for: club/organization meetings (literary societies, YMCA, alumni groups), wedding invites, concert programs, commencement programs, church programs, and local playbills.

- Includes invites and event programs. Includes church programs, commencement programs, a foreign language conference program, invitation to class parties, program for the Mock Republican Convention, programs for plays, a prom, and a Russian circus program
- Folder 7: Foreign Language, Undated
- Includes papers and index cards written in foreign languages. Most of the material is Russian. Dean had a particular interest in foreign languages.
- Folder 8: Letterpress Halftones, Undated
- Includes 12 letterpress halftone prints of various US military planes and navy ships. Ships: U.S.S Ammen, U.S.S. Gansevoort, U.S.S. Salt Lake City, U.S.S. Mullany, P.T. 105, U.S.S. Minneapolis, and U.S.S. Saratoga. Aircrafts: "Buccaneer", B-26 "Marauder" Medium Bomber, P-51 "Mustang", "Mariner", and "Avenger". These images were pulled from a photo album which was in poor condition.

- Includes 8 memorandum books, primarily filled out by John G. Harrison and Howard Harrison. These were used for a variety of purposes - to keep track of debts owed, to keep track of correspondence, to track the weather, to use as a diary, and to note the family births and deaths.

- Includes 7 memorandum books, primarily filled out by John G. Garrison or his wife. These were used for a variety of purposes - to keep track of debts owed, to track correspondence, to track the weather, or to note the births and deaths in the family. The later books in this folder belong to Dean and primarily track his spending and his bank deposits.

- Includes 8 memorandum books. These were used for a variety of purposes. Most the books in this folder track debts owed, family births and deaths, and farm information. Several of the memorandum books in this folder bear no recognizable date.

- Includes papers related to Dean's time in the military. Includes: personal history statement, division patches, correspondence regarding his desire to transfer to intelligence, draft notice, appointment of leadership, and Berea College transcript.
