Collection Overview
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Mason & Hanger Historical Records consist of company records that were in storage for many years and considered "historical" by the new parent company, Day & Zimmermann. As there was no order to the material, an order has been imposed that we believe is useful for access and which is essentially alphabetical by project. The projects include: Boston Traffic Tunnel, Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Camp Zachary Taylor, Cannelton Locks and Dam, Carquinez Bridge, Fort Randall Dam, Gateway Army Ammunition Plant, Grand Coulee Dam, Harvey Canal Tunnel, Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, Kennedy Space Center, Lincoln Tunnel, Michoud Assembly Facility (for NASA), Pantex Ordnance Plant and the Van Wyck Expressway. There are also files relating to a number of other projects not listed here but which are listed in the finding aid. The company did major work for the Defense Department, the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) and the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
The primary grouping is the "Project Files" which have been ordered alphabetically and which sometimes contain the full range of documents relating to each project from initial bid to completion, including agreements, correspondence, photographs, drawings & blueprints, construction logs, progress reports, payroll and legal documents. The next series is "Financial & Corporate Records" that include financial reports, audits, correspondence, income-tax returns, minutes, newsletters and statements. Loose photographs, oversize material and ephemera are found at the end of the finding aid and generally relate back to "Project Files."
The collection also contains detailed records for various farm enterprises owned by Silas and H.P Mason.
Collection Historical Note
Founded in Virginia in 1827 by Claiborne Rice Mason, the company was originally known as the Mason Syndicate. From its first contract to move dirt using a mule, a cart, a pick and a shovel, the company has been dedicated to exceeding customers' expectations. By 1885, the firm had re-located to Kentucky where it became renowned for its many noteworthy historical projects such as the C&O Railroad's main line extension into the Ohio Valley, the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington, and Camp Zachary Taylor in Louisville. Today, as the nation's oldest continuously operating engineering and construction company, Mason & Hanger carries on the tradition of quality and customer service that C.R. Mason began with his pick and shovel 175 years ago.

- Second Contract Volume 2 includes progress reports #11-18, Feb-Sep 1945. Each report includes captioned photographs and there are nine pages of progress curves and graphs. Also included are supplementary notes for Contract 2 in the volume's final pages.

- Contracts dated for Jan 1942 (initial contract) and Mar 194 Jan 1943 (additional buildings). Included in this folder are cost estimates for contract 2 which lists the additional structures being built, a dispatch from 21 May 1942 entitled "Engineering News Record #123" which summarizes the progress of work completed and in progress, internal memoranda regarding scheduling, labor graphs, further sheets of building costs, materials used, and other data used for cost and labor analysis.
- Folder 3: Badger Ordnance Works.
- "Smokeless Powder Plant" is a set of progress reports for Contract 1, starting with "Progress Report No. 2, Feb 1942" through "Progress Report No. 18, Jun 1943." Includes labor graphs and photographs for each report and a topographical map of the site area. It seems that this information is repeated in the bound volumes 1 and 2 entitled "Badger Ordnance Works, First Contract" with the omission of the map and labor graphs.

- Loose photographs folder contains a handwritten note (author unknown) stating that enclosed photos are "Material for... brochure." Most of these are aerial photographs but a few are taken on the ground or inside the plant. Each has a page-length caption.

- Narrows Tunnel Report, 17 May 1945. This report covers a tunnel connecting Brooklyn to the Borough of Richmond. Apparently the report was issued to the company in anticipation of a bid for contract which the company either did not win or did not decide to bid for.

- Mason & Hanger apparently bid on construction of the Hoover Dam, however they were not one of the Six Companies that conglomerated to build it. This box contains the specifications, schedule, and drawings for the Hoover Dam, Power Plant, and Appurtenant Works. This document is stamped with "Advance Draft of Specifications, Not to be Used For Submitting Bids." Included are a few photos, several graphs, and numerous technical drawings of the dam and its subsidiary structures. Includes Mason & Hanger's financial estimates of the project, written in the margins.

- A History of Construction and a Completion Report of Camp Zachary Taylor, 1917. The camp was contracted in Jun 1917 and work was begun immediately. This document is essentially the progress reports of that undertaking. It is typed on very thin paper and is difficult to read as the ink has faded. Included are a chart detailing the camp's chain of command, a progress curve chart, and several captioned photographs of the camp.
