Katherine Phelps Caperton was the daughter of Thomas Phelps and his wife Sarah Cobb Phelps of Dreaming Creek Heights in Madison County, Kentucky. Mrs. Caperton was educated at Madison Female Institute of Richmond and Bartholomew School for Young Ladies of Cincinnati, Ohio.
She married James W. Caperton in 1890 and they had one daughter Jamie Caperton who married Paul Burnam.
Mrs. Caperton was Honorary Regent for life of the Boonesborough Chapter D.A.R., a past vice president of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Kentucky, a charter member of the First Christian Church, a member of both the Kentucky and Virginia Historical Societies.
An able genealogist and historian, she wrote three books and numerous articles dealing with the early history of Madison County and Kentucky.
