Collection Overview
Scope and Contents of the Materials
This is an artificial collection created from various manuscript mathematics books found in the book collection and the Dorris Museum collection.
Each of the books focus on a specific type of math, such as basic arithmetic, financial calculations and geometry for land surveying. Some of these volumes seem to have been used by teachers, but others may have been created by students.
In addition to the books in this collection, other similar texts can be found in the Crook Family Papers and in the R.A. Edwards Papers.

- Folder 1: Martin Baker Text, 1820-1835
- This is a two part text that begins with geometry, logarithms, plane trigonometry, and then applies those techniques to land surveying with large sections on acreage calculation and equal division of land. The second section deals with the measurement of timber and other construction measures. This text is based on Hawney's Complete Measurer: Or, The Whole Art of Measuring. There are occasional personal notes in the text, such as the date his mother died and his grandmother's name. Martin Baker is from Cumberland County, Kentucky. - Folder 2: William W. Branham Text, 1816
This text is primarily financial and has sections on exchange rates, barter, profit and loss and partnership. The section on exchange rates covers rates from various countries including France, the Netherlands, Germany and China among others.
William Branham was from Bourbon County, Kentucky.

- This text contains beautifully drawn title pages and section headers and covers topics such as the Rule of Three and its variations, tare and trett, insurance, interest, barter and other financial topics.

- This text begins with basic arithmetic and progresses to weights and measures.
- Folder 5: Mary Jane Patterson Text, 1834
- Basic arithmetic and weights and measures are the focus of this text. The cover is lined with the Richmond, KY newspaper The Farmer's Chronicle dated February 25, 1834. From Dorris Museum Collection, accession # N.1 or 564.
