Biographical Note
Miss Maude Gibson (1870-1964) was an Eastern art professor from 1910 until 1941, serving as the only instructor in the department for twenty of those years. She was noted for her watercolor sketches of landscapes and floral compositions.
Maude was born in Pennsylvania and attended Lebanon Normal School, Miami University, Columbia University, and the School of Applied Design and the Nellie Art Pottery School. She also studied in Europe over the summer of 1926.
She wrote several stories about the early years of Eastern and those can be found, along with her paintings, in the Maude Gibson Collection in the Archives. After her retirement in 1941 she lived in Burnam Hall and continued to paint until she was over 90 years old.
