Mary Floyd was a native of Pulaski County and taught in the public schools of Somerset, Campbellsville and Louisville for several years. She came to Eastern State College, first as student and then as teacher, in the early 1920s, serving as a professor of history and as college librarian from 1929 until her retirement in 1957.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Cecilian Music Club and the Woman's Club. She held memberships in a number of professional organizations, including the American Association of University Women, the American Library Association and the Kentucky Library Association which she served for a term as director.
She held academic degrees from Eastern, the University of Chicago nd Columbia University.
