Physical Description: Artificial Collection. correspondence, account books, legal documents.
Scope and Contents: This collection contains manuscript material relating to Philadelphia merchants who had dealings with various parts of Kentucky from the late eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. The various company papers that were acquired separately have been brought together as an artificial collection because it was determined that they would be more useful to researchers if they were brought together rather than processed as stand alone collections. The collections consist largely of correspondence that concern banking, property, account settlements, businesses, and trading in the Kentucky region. Researchers may also find invoices and pages from account books. The collection does not contain the complete records of these firms but was acquired because of the individual documents that related to Kentucky. They are arranged by company and, in the case of Ashhurst and Gill, by sender and then chronological. The Clow material is strictly chronological and includes transcripts.
Comments: Includes collections 2003-016, 2003-017, and 2003-056.
