Extent: 0.36 Cubic Feet
Date Acquired: 09/12/2017
Subjects: Music.
Languages: English, German
Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection of sheet music came from the Mitchell family of Jessamine County. The collection includes a number of pieces from Kentuckians such as Stephen Foster and Will S. Hays. Other pieces were published in Lexington or Louisville, Kentucky. There are also multiple pieces of music from the Civil War and World War I. Other pieces are from classical composers such as Mozart and Strauss or popular early twentieth century composers such as Irving Berlin. A few pieces of music have lyrics handwritten on the back. In all this collection is a good representation of music that would have been played in Kentucky homes from 1850 through 1935.
Collection Historical Note
Several members of the Mitchell family are represented within this collection of sheet music. The earliest music has the names Emma Mitchell and Sue Mitchell inscribed on many of the pieces. Later music is inscribed with the name Marion Mitchell. Emma Jane Mitchell (1854-1939) and Sue Mitchell (1846-1867) were the daughters of George and Louisa Soper Mitchell. Neither sister married and later in life Emma lived with her brothers' families. Marion Mitchell (1902-1998) was the daughter of Emma and Sue's brother, Alonzo Mitchell. Marion was a music teacher in Jessamine and Bourbon Counties and never married.
