Scope and Contents of the Materials

The William H. Miller collection is made up of genealogy-based material. It contains Miller's manuscript of his book History and Genealogies of the Families of Miller, Woods, Harris, Wallace, Maupin, Oldham, Kavanaugh, and Brown Families, as well as the unpublished manuscript for a second book. The manuscript includes family lineage for families all over Madison County, but also expands to include family migration between Virginia and Kentucky and westward. Also included is some of Miller's personal correspondence and miscellaneous photographs and ephemera, including his research and notes on Native Americans.

Biographical Note

William Harris Miller was a Kentuckian genealogist who published History and the Genealogies of the Miller, Woods, Harris, Waller, Maupin, Oldham, Kavanaugh, and Brown Families in 1907. Miller was born on October 22, 1852. At age 19, he was deputy county clerk under George D. Shackelford, and went on to serve as deputy sheriff under Charles K. Oldham. Miller was later appointed circuit court clerk, where he became acquainted with records and names around Madison County. He married Katherine Oldham on February 17, 1884. Miller died of a long-term illness on August 2, 1928, at age 75.
