Collection Overview
Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection consists of the genealogy research files compiled by Bill and Kathy Vockery over decades of conducting family research for people around the country. They conducted research in Madison and Garrard Counties, Kentucky. The content of the files includes original correspondence between the Vockerys and researchers and copies of documents that prove various family connections. In rare cases there are original letters and documents that were sent to the Vockerys. This collection would be very helpful for family history researchers in Madison and Garrard Counties.
Collection Historical Note
Kathy Vockery, a retired school counselor, and her husband Bill have written numerous genealogy books on Madison, Garrard and Jessamine Counties in Kentucky. They have found hidden cemeteries, and have transcribed court records, marriage records and vital records. In addition, for many years they have assisted genealogy researchers in finding their Madison and Garrard County roots.

- Correspondence between Vockery and Lt. Col. Alfred J. Spiry Sr. and Margaret Cotton Spiry, David Riddel, Betty H. Secrest, and Alan R. Frank. Also contains a copy of a document entitled "Cotton Genealogy in Garrard and Madison Co. KY.", family group records, information from the "Nathaniel Cotton Bible", and an apparently complete family history compiled by Ruth F. Hawkins including a family pedigree, photos of family, copies of census records, notes on individuals, marriage and death certificates, and pension records.

- Correspondence between Vockery and Shirley A. Winkelhoch regarding the will of James Coulter with a family group record.
- Folder 3: Courtney
- Correspondence between Vockery and Diane Hanson, Ronald Weddle, Russ Skaggs, Betty Dorsett Duke, Jocelyn R. Miller. Also contains a copy of a document entitled "History of Clay County" with a specific article about "Capt. Archibald C. Courtney", a copy of a handwritten house purchase between two members of the Courtney family in Missouri dated 30 July 1833, family group records, a copy of a deed of conveyance from Archibald C. Courtney to George A. Ballard dated 30 January 1893, a copy of a petition to the judge of Garrard County regarding John Courtney undated, and a copy of a deed of conveyance dated 21 November 1837.
- Folder 4: Covington
- Correspondence between Vockery and Sue Masters, William B. Drake Jr. Also contains family group records, a copy of the will of Milton C. Covington dated 4 February 1927, and information from Mr. Drake regarding the Louise Covington Haynes Fund" at Midway College.
- Folder 5: Cox
- Contains a family pedigree compiled by Nancy J. Clark which culminates with William John Cox, as well as family group records, and a set of letters to Vockery from Bruce Allardice requesting information that he needed for his forthcoming book, "Other Generals in Gray."
- Folder 6: Coy
- Contains a copy of a deed of conveyance naming a certain "Coy" as the owner of Kentucky land on 15 April 1810, family group records, a copy of a family search dictating the Coy Family in the census records from 1850 to 1880 accumulated by the Schuyler County Historical Society, and a copy of a family pedigree compiled by Gladys Forbes Richey. Also contains correspondence between Vockery and a "Mr. Coy" with a detailed lineage of the Coys dating back to 1715, as well as correspondence with Paul D. Michael, Linda K. Rader, A.A. Rousseau (who compiled extensive notes regarding the Coy family),Gloria Ray-Olmstead, Louella J. Dyer, Cindy Dougherty.
- Folder 7: Coyle
- Contains an annotated family pedigree, correspondence between J. H. Hobgood Jr. and "Mr. Calico" regarding the family of Beverly R. Coyle with copies of pertinent documents attached, and a letter written to Vockery from Ella Sheffield inquiring as to a copy of apprentice papers dated February 1805 involving Nancy Coyle and her son.
- Folder 8: Crabb
- Correspondence between Vockery and David Thayer regarding John Crabb (b. 1775 d. 1830) with 32 additional pages of research done by Mr. Thayer making footnotes and study annotations regarding the family. Also contains correspondence between Vockery and James R. Howenstein, as well as a single family group record.
- Folder 9: Craig
- Correspondence between Vockery and Rev. Harold C. Craig who gives a lengthily noted lineage of the Craig family dating to 1800, an antiquated pamphlet (both a copy and the original) that details William Craig (1750-1779) a Revolutionary War soldier, and his descendants. Also contains a copy of a pedigree chart compiled by T.W. Mundy,
- Folder 10: Crank
- Correspondence between Vockery and Cathy Weiland regarding the Cranks dating to 1831 with a copy of Mary E. Crank's death certificate attached dated 15 January 1937, marriage certificates dating from 1865, as well as the death certificate of Cynthia Crank Naylor dated 27 April 1960, along with other family group records.
- Folder 11: Crawford
- Contains only family group records beginning with James Crawford (b. 4 December 1770 d. 3 December 1883).
- Folder 12: Creech
- Correspondence between Vockery and Lillian B. Creech, as well as a family lineage "taken from a letter of James Taylor Adams" on 11 February 1938 detailing the heirs of Jonathan and John Creech both of Harlan County, KY.
- Folder 13: Crews
- Correspondence between Vockery and Carl L. Franks (with attached group family records dating to 1755), Linda Grennan, Francis JoAnne Ernst, and Rita Gibson. Also contains copies of a lineage report beginning with John Gentry (b. 24 September 1778), a family pedigree compiled by JoAnne Ernst including a biographical article regarding David Crews (b. November 2 1740), and copies of a document entitled "Master Index: Virginia Surveys and Grants, 1774-1791" with pertinent portions highlighted.
- Folder 14: Cringler
- Correspondence between Vockery and Gordon C. Heebner with attached family group records dating to 1767.
- Folder 15: Crockett
- Contains several notes and hand-drawn maps of the John Crockett estate dated at 1868, as well as copies of a document entitled "Crockett of Wythe County, Virginia" which details the family history of the Crocketts beginning with Joseph and Samuel who came to America in 1715. Also contains copies of documents detail a residence called "Thornwood" in Jessamine County, and copies of a document entitled "History of Washington Co., Indiana" with specific portions pulled regarding the Crockett family there.
- Folder 16: Crooke
- Correspondence between Vockery and Catherine Renschler (with attached family group records dating to 1805), James C. "Neal" Kepp (with attached family group records dating to 1790), Ina Wallace (regarding the Crookes beginning with John "Major Crooke" b. 10 February 1766, including copies of the obituary of John W. Crooke, a short history of his life in America, and several pages of his lineage), Elizabeth Broomfield, and Rose-Marie Schneider.
- Folder 17: Cross
- Correspondence between Vockery and Harry Purslow including a family group record dating to 1775, Linda Gibbons Lee, Edward A. Lucas. Also contains a copy of a newspaper clipping detailing an interview with Mary Wilson (b. 1818).
- Folder 18: Croushorn
- Contains family group records dating to 1859, along with an extensive lineage that Vockery compiled for Lillie M. Lawson (per a postcard also contain within).
- Folder 19: Crow
- Correspondence between Vockery and George R. Foster, Carol I. Evans (including a family pedigree, pertinent copies of census records, a copy of the death certificate of Emmeline Dulin, a copy of a letter written by Mary Brinegar regarding pensions for service in the Civil War, a deed of conveyance to Joseph R. Crow dated 3 September 1840, copies of affidavits regarding Mary Brinegar's pension application dated 19 November 1913, and a copy of the marriage certificate between Amos Brinnegar and Mary E. Grove dated 24 June 1866), and Mike and Sue Crow.
- Folder 20: Crutchfield
- Correspondence between Vockery and Jack London (with attached pedigree and family group records), Reda Manes (along with other family group records). Also contains a copy of a death certificate for Robert Orion Crutchfield dated 2 February 1938.
- Folder 21: Cummins
- Correspondence between Vockery and James V. Cummins Jr. (with attached lineage entitled "the Ancestors of Champion C. Cummins on mother's Side" which begins with Elder Stephen Collier b. 1775, as well as an incomplete copy of the last will and testament of Moses Cummins), Rev. Raymond Cummings, Thelma Cummins Gamble (including attached family pedigree and group records).
- Folder 22: Cunis
- Contains a copy of a document outlining the Cunis family beginning in 1808, a copy of the last will and testament of Jacob Cunnis dated 17 ___ber 1840, and contains a copy of a pedigree chart with corresponding family group records which provide several biographical notes per individual listed.
- Folder 23: Curle
- Correspondence between Vockery and Elizabeth Guynn with copies of Archibald Curle's will dated 21 March 1832 along with copies out of vol. 1 of the French Tipton Papers referring to Eliza Jane Curle's marriage to Judge Thomas W. Vernon, and copies from the Presbyterian Church of Richmond dated July 1827.
- Folder 24: Curtis
- Contains family group records beginning with Mordecai Curtis b. 1827. Also contains correspondence between Vockery and Martha Curtis and Greg Maynard, respectively.
- Folder 25: "D"
- Contains a family group records of James Dinwoodie, a copy of a deed of conveyance to Daniel Dumford dated 13 January 1787, a copy of the marriage certificate book detailing Solomon Dumford's marriage to Susannah Knott on 12 January 1796, a family group record for Thomas Dougherty and William Dozier respectively, and correspondence between Vockery and Stanley Ray Duett with several notes regarding the Duett family.
- Folder 26: Daley/Dennis
- Contains a copy of a marriage certificate between T.W. Daily and Josie Master dated 25 May 1891, several family group records, correspondence between Vockery and Pat Jones regarding research that Pat had already accomplished. This research is included in the file, and is extensive particularly regarding Elisha Dennis (m 13 December 1780), William Clark (m. 17 October 1798), James Thomas (m. 1873), and William Daley. Also contains correspondence between Vockery and Marilyn Hummel with attached pedigree and results of Vockery's inquiries.
- Folder 27: Daniel
- Contains family group records, correspondence between Vockery and Dallas M. Daniel with included transcriptions of deeds of conveyance to James Daniels dated 4 June 1888 as well as another dated 19 October 1888, and a document of public auction involving Travis Daniel and Britton Daniel dated September 1892. Also contains correspondence between Vockery and Elizabeth Daniel Wampler.
- Folder 28: Davidson
- Contains copies of a document entitled "Davidson Family Research by Donna Stark Thompson: 10/15/90" with attached pedigrees, census records, family group records, along with a letter therein from Donald L. Armstrong to Vockery assessing its usefulness to them. Also contains a copy of the cover page of the Courier-Journal from Louisville dated 18 November 1956 with a photo of L.G. Davidson, further correspondence between Vockery and Armstrong regarding Leander Davidson, a copy of the will of Abner Davidson dated 19 September 1840, and correspondence between Vockery and Orren G. Davidson.
