Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Hockaday Family Papers is a collection of personal papers about Dr. W.L Hockaday and his son, J.S. Hockaday, regarding their breeding and ownership of Rex Peavine. Dr. W.L. Hockaday was a well-known physician in Richmond, Kentucky, as well as renowned owner of Rex Peavine, a champion saddle-back horse. J.S Hockaday continued on the breeding of Rex Peavine along with maintaining the family farm. This collection contains personal records by both Dr. W.L. and J.S. Hockaday concerning Rex Peavine and the medical practice. There are also certifcates for Rex Peavine and Lord Peavine from the American Saddle Horse Breeders' Association.

Collection Historical Note

Doctor William Letcher Hockaday was born on July 16, 1843 near Menalus Pike. He graduated from Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia, then returned to Richmond, Kentucky where he started a successful medical practice. He also began to breed and produce horses. His most famous being Rex Peavine. He passed on the rights to Rex Peavine and the breeding of him to his son, James Starling Hockaday, upon his death on June 13, 1911. J.S. Hockaday was born November 11, 1881 to Dr. W.L. Hockaday and his wife Louisa. After his father's death, he took over the family horse farm and continued the breeding of Rex Peavine. J.S Hockaday died on December 4, 1946. This collection was donated by Gladys D. Maupin, the granddaughter of Dr. W.L. Hockaday.
