Abstract
This collection includes letters, documents, and newspaper clippings from the time in which Dr. Aughtum Howard served as a faculty memeber at both Kentucky Wesleyan College and Eastern Kentucky University.
Scope and Contents of the Materials
Dr. Aughtum Howard kept many documents and letters from her time at both Kentucky Wesleyan College and Eastern Kentucky University. Along with some interesting pieces of her life outside of teaching, including her family’s World War II ration books, Sunday School lessons, and original poetry, the collection includes letters and documents showcasing her time as a faculty member and a member of the organizations she took part in. Information can be found on Kentucky Wesleyan College reports, Dr. Howard’s time as co-sponsor of the Eastern Kentucky University Class of 1967, and meetings of the Kentucky Association of Colleges, Secondary, and Elementary Schools. A large portion of this collection relates to the Mathematical Association of America, including information on meetings, traveling speakers, mathematical papers and speeches, and contributions to the American Mathematical Monthly. There is also a significant amount of information regarding the American Association of University Professors, specifically relating to Dr. Howard’s role in the Curriculum Study Committee. Newspaper clippings involving articles on Dr. Howard, the Kentucky Wesleyan Lyceum Committee, the AAUP Powell Committee Report, and other education related topics are included in this collection as well.
Collection Historical Note
Dr. Aughtum Howard was born in 1906 in Alma, Kentucky. After earning her B.A. from Georgetown University in 1926, as well as her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1938 and 1942, Dr. Aughtum Howard was employed as an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1942. In September of 1958, Dr. Howard accepted a job as an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Eastern Kentucky University, where she remained teaching until her retirement in 1972. During her time at Kentucky Wesleyan and Eastern Kentucky University, she fulfilled leadership roles in numerous organizations, including the Mathematical Association of America, the American Association of University Professors, the Kentucky Association of Church-Related Colleges, and the Kentucky Association of Colleges, Secondary, and Elementary Schools.

- Contains letters addressed to and sent by Aughtum Howard covering topics including math courses, meetings, requests for social security numbers, a visit with Jesse Stuart, Greek initiation activities, thesis results, math department student assistants, the Third District Education Association, studies, the Library Committee, and the racial policies of Kentucky Wesleyan.

- Contains information regarding the establishment of an American Red Cross chapter at Kentucky Welsleyan. Includes the authority to organize the chapter, officer elections, and the American Red Cross college unit policies.

- Contains programs from the 1946 Annual Guest Night of the Poet's Club, the 1947 Annual Guest Night of the Poet's Club, and the Kentucky Education Association Twenty-Seventh Annual School Executives Luncheon. Also contains a convention notebook from the Christian Board of Publication.

Papers include letters from the secretary-treasurer of the organization, letters regarding Traveling Speaker Dr. Walter Moore, letters regarding math lectures, meeting announcements for the Kentucky section, and letters inquiring about the MAA's committees.

- Contains annual reports to the Kentucky Wesleyan College president regarding which courses were taught, the credit hours of each course, the number of students in each course, the number of absences in each course, and the number of students who earned each letter grade.
- Folder 11: Poetry, 1952-1953
- Contains the May-June 1952 issue of the Christian Education Magazine with Dr. Aughtum Howard's poem, "I Am A Teacher" featured, as well as correspondence regarding the feature. Also includes other poems written by Dr. Howard, including "When Comes the Spring," "Stones and Sand," "Worry," "We Lift Our Hands," and "My Garden."

- Contains correspondence about Dr. Aughtum Howard's time as Traveling Speaker for the Kentucky section of the Mathematical Association of America. Includes letters regarding the procedure for securing Dr. Howard as a guest lecturer, and requests from various Kentucky colleges for visits.

- Contains letters between Dr. Aughtum Howard and Dr. J.C. Eaves from the University of Kentucky. Eaves as the Traveling Speaker of the Kentucky section of the Mathematical Association of America, proposed dates for Dr. J.C. Eaves' visit to Kentucky Wesleyan College, and a request for Dr. Aughtum Howard to be a guest speaker at the National Science Foundation program.

- Contains letters regarding an open teaching position in the mathematics department at Eastern from Dr. Smith Park, head of the mathematics department at Eastern, and letters following arranging a meeting time, Dr. Aughtum Howard's acceptance of the job, Dr. Aughtum Howard's resignation letter to Kentucky Wesleyan, letters following her resignation from Kentucky Wesleyan president, Oscar Lever, and a letter from Bill Owsley from Morehead State College asking if Dr. Howard would be open to working there instead.

- Contains a note about an Introduction to Education course and a chart detailing the graduates in teacher preparation at various Kentucky colleges.
- Folder 21: Mathematical Association of America- Binomial Expansion Paper, 1960-1966
- Contains correspondence regarding a paper submitted for publishing in the Classroom Notes section of the American Mathematical Monthly, comments on the paper, revising of the paper, and the publishing of the paper many years later.

- Contains papers related to the Mathematical Association of America. Contents include letters about electing a governor for the Kentucky section, letters announcing meetings of the Kentucky section and national organization, programs for meetings of the Kentucky section and national organization, letters regarding representatives for the organization from all universities and colleges, letters regarding officer elections, meeting minutes, a questionnaire for members of the organization, and bylaws of the Kentucky section. Also contains scores and summaries from Mathematics Association of America high school contests.

- Contains two journals kept by Dr. Aughtum Howard. Pages contain handwritten and typed accounts of visiting different schools for the Curriculum Study Committee. Accounts focus on what curriculum is taught and observations about the schools.
- Folder 2: Miscellaneous Eastern Correspondence, 1961-1970
- Contains letters addressed to and sent by Dr. Aughtum Howard covering topic including an invitation to speak at the Women's Club, Founders Day awards, the Summer Institute of Mathematics, textbook errors, a speech by Dean Barr, teacher certification in the state of Kentucky, elementary school instruction improvement, and an article in The American Scientist.
- Folder 3: Instruction Improvement, 1962-1963
- Contains correspondence regarding a meeting of the Central Kentucky ASCD District on curriculum improvement and Dr. Aughtum Howard's attendance as a resource person. Also contains invitations to the ASCD meeting, a program for the meeting, and suggestions for group discussions on curriculum improvement. Also contains correspondence regarding Dr. Howard speaking at a Teachers' Conference in Letcher County, a program and group schedule for the Teachers' Conference focusing on the improvement of instruction, and two reports on improving oral and written communication.

- Contains a statement of principles approved by the council of the AAUP regarding university faculty, a report of the committee on faculty participation in college and university government, a paper written by T.L. Arterberry on faculty participation in college administration, a speech given by Dr. Aughtum Howard on faculty in administration at Alice Lloyd Junior College, a and a speech given by Dr. Howard to students of Alice Lloyd College.

- Contains a letter to Eastern president, Dr. Robert R. Matin, requesting permission to attend a session of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, a letter to the council regarding a change in a journal, and a letter from the membership supervisor of the organization acknowledging Dr. Aughtum Howard's Life Membership payment to the council.

- Contains newspaper clippings focusing on the Governor's Conference on Higher Education, correspondence regarding registration for the conference, a program from the conference, a copy of "Within Our Reach: Highlights from the Report of the Commission on Goals for Higher Education in the South," and a booklet of proceedings from the Governor's Conference on Higher Education, and a copy of "A Foundation Program for Public Higher Education in Kentucky."
