Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Lambert/Harrison Family Papers highlights the lives of several members of the family but focuses on Dean Warren Lambert. The collection features an emphasis on Dean's interest in politics, military affairs, foreign language, history, and the many clubs and organizations that he was involved with. This emphasis can be seen in his correspondence, his collected publications, his photos, and his personal writings. Lambert was invested in his community - he wrote histories of Berea and participated in various community groups and clubs, such as the Berea Players or the Bluegrass Boys' State.

Regarding other members of the Lambert/Harrison family, Dean's mother (May Harrison), aunt (Elizabeth "Bessie" Harrison), and grandfather (John G. Harrison) are present in correspondence, memorandum books, collected publications, financial papers, and educational papers.

Collection Historical Note

Dean Warren Lambert was born in 1927 in Fairfax, South Dakota, but was raised in Berea, KY by his mother, May Harrison. He went on to get his bachelor's degree from Berea College in 1948. He received his masters degree and doctorate degree from University of Kentucky. He worked for the Berea Citizen paper and served as a clerk for Hon. Francis Case (State Representative - South Dakota). Finally, he joined Berea College as a history faculty member in 1953 where he specialized in Russian history and U.S. Civil War history. Dean was involved with many clubs and organizations such as Bluegrass Boys’ State, the Berea Players, the Berea Cemetery Association, and he was a founding member of the Madison County Civil War Roundtable. In 1995, Dean published When the Ripe Pears Fall: The Battle of Richmond, Kentucky, a history of the Civil War in Richmond, Kentucky. This work is also available in our archives. Dean passed away in 2002 and is buried in Berea, KY.

Folder 1: "These are Their Pictures", Mar-63: Full script for a Founders' Day play held at Berea College.
Folder 2: Kentucky Highway Historical Marker Interim Report, Nov-63: A report put together for the Governor of Kentucky at the time (Bert T. Combs), including maps, titles, and locations for every highway historical marker in Kentucky at that time (1963). The markers in the report are split into districts and counties.

Folder 9: Protective Tariff, Undated: A booklet produced by the Woman's National Republican Committee which contains information on tariffs meant to educate women about their purpose and to broaden their understanding of labor.

Folder 21: Great Decisions Fact Sheets, 1963: Contains an introductory booklet as well as eight "fact sheet" booklets containing information on international politics from the time. Each topic is broken up into different booklets or "fact sheets" with an opinion ballet at the end of the sheets.
Folder 22: Emergency Handbook, 1960: Contains two copies of "Handbook for Emergencies", one of which belonged to May Lambert. The handbook advises on family preparedness, warning signals, fallout protection, and community plans for action. The handbook also contains many illustrations detailing first aid instructions.

Folder 24: Of Sun and Wind, 1962: A poetry book by Joseph Marion. Written on the inside is "Season's Greetings" as well as Joseph Marion's name and the year.
Folder 25: The Kentucky Reservist, 1953: Two pamphlets produced by the Kentucky Military district containing news of the reserve. January edition is the first edition. Other edition is No.7 from July 1953
Folder 26: Souvenir Program, 1948: A souvenir program celebrating the Gregory County 50th Golden Jubilee annivesary in Bonesteel, South Dakota.
Folder 27: "Star Tips", 1947: "Star Tips: A Thousand Ways to Save Your Days" by Grace L. Beede, a booklet with information on housekeeping, from cooking to cleaning to stain removal.
